Competency Based Qualification

Design Research Methods I

Certificate in Interior Design (KNQF)

Unit Aim

This aim of this unit is to provide Learners with the knowledge skills and understanding of the principles and methodologies of design research, emphasising the role of research in interior design and related fields. Learners explore different research types, the research process and ethical considerations in conducting studies. By understanding how to formulate research questions, collect and analyse data and interpret findings, Learners develop critical thinking and analytical skills. A field visit provides practical exposure, reinforcing the application of research methods in real-world design contexts.

Unit Content

Know the purpose and significance of design research in interior design.

Overview of design research

Definition and purpose of design research

Role of research in interior design and creative industries

Characteristics of effective design research

Know qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research approaches.

Qualitative research methods (e.g. interviews, observations)

Quantitative research methods (e.g. surveys, measurements)

Mixed-methods approaches

Applied vs. basic research

Experimental and non-experimental research

Be able to apply the research process, from problem identification to data collection and analysis.

Identifying a research problem or question

Conducting a literature review

Formulating hypotheses or research questions

Choosing a research design and methodology

Defining and operationalising variables

Sampling methods and participant selection

Data collection techniques

Data analysis and interpretation

Drawing conclusions and making recommendations

Reporting and presenting research findings

Be able to formulate research questions and select appropriate methodologies

Understanding research questions: purpose, characteristics of effective research questions

Types of research questions

Formulating research questions: techniques for identifying research gaps or problems; converting a topic or problem into a researchable question; aligning research questions with research aims and objectives.

Selecting research methodologies: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches;

matching research questions to appropriate methodologies; strengths and limitations of different methodological approaches.

Justifying methodological choices: factors influencing methodology selection

Know how to analyse and interpret research findings to inform design decisions

Data analysis: purpose of analysing research data in design contexts

Types of data

Common analysis techniques

Interpreting research findings: making sense of data in relation to research questions or hypotheses; identifying patterns, trends and anomalies

Drawing evidence based conclusions

Linking findings to design decisions; translating research insights into actionable design strategies; using data to support design choices

Communicating insights; presenting findings clearly and persuasively; using visual tools to support interpretation; ensuring clarity and impact in communication

Be able to recognise ethical considerations in research, including informed consent and confidentiality.

Research Ethics

Ethical considerations in design research

Informed consent and participant confidentiality

Institutional review processes and ethical approval

Be able to conduct practical research through field visits and real-world case studies

Purpose of practical research: understanding the value; gaining real-world insights that support

evidence-based design decisions

Planning and preparing for field visits

Conducting field research; observing spatial layouts, materials, lighting and user interactions in real

environments; engaging with users, designers, or stakeholders through interviews or informal

conversations; taking notes, photographs and sketches to document findings.

Analysing case studies

Reflecting on findings
