Unit Aim
This aim of this unit is to provide Learners with the knowledge skills and understanding of the principles and methodologies of design research, emphasising the role of research in interior design and related fields. Learners explore different research types, the research process and ethical considerations in conducting studies. By understanding how to formulate research questions, collect and analyse data and interpret findings, Learners develop critical thinking and analytical skills. A field visit provides practical exposure, reinforcing the application of research methods in real-world design contexts.

Data analysis: purpose of analysing research data in design contexts
Types of data
Common analysis techniques
Interpreting research findings: making sense of data in relation to research questions or hypotheses; identifying patterns, trends and anomalies
Drawing evidence based conclusions
Linking findings to design decisions; translating research insights into actionable design strategies; using data to support design choices
Communicating insights; presenting findings clearly and persuasively; using visual tools to support interpretation; ensuring clarity and impact in communication

Purpose of practical research: understanding the value; gaining real-world insights that support
evidence-based design decisions
Planning and preparing for field visits
Conducting field research; observing spatial layouts, materials, lighting and user interactions in real
environments; engaging with users, designers, or stakeholders through interviews or informal
conversations; taking notes, photographs and sketches to document findings.
