Unit Aim

This unit will allow Learners to demonstrate competency in cleaning and servicing guest bedrooms. This unit will also provide Learners with the fundamental skills to clean and service guest bedrooms safely, to workplace standards and to meet the needs of customers.

Unit Content

1 Collect linen and make beds

  • Linen and bed coverings: Sheets, pillowcases, valances, blankets and duvets, bedspreads and throws, pillows, mattress protectors
  • Beds: double or single, cots or folding beds, zip and link, sofa bed
  • Workplace standards (linen): clean, undamaged, correct size
  • Safety: lifting and handling
  • Soiled linen: organisational procedures

2 Clean and service furnished areas

  • Prepare work area: use of protective clothing, put up hazard warning signs, protect surrounding areas
  • Cleaning equipment and materials: mop systems for wet use, mop systems for dry use, colour-coded cloths, duster, bucket, sponge or non-abrasive pad, brushes, dustpan, abrasive pads, vacuum cleaners, suction dryers, polishers or burnishers, scrubbers, spray extractors
  • Chemicals: multi-surface cleaner, glass cleaner, air freshener, polish, sanitiser, stain and grease removers, floor and carpet cleaner, spray polish, floor maintainer, floor stripper, degreasers, greasy stain removers, non-greasy stain removers, cleaning granules
  • Floor coverings: carpet, hardwood, laminate, ceramic tile, vinyl, polished concrete, natural stone
  • Cleaning methods: sweeping, dusting or damp dusting, wet or dry mopping, spot mopping, scrubbing, scraping, wall washing, dry or wet suction cleaning, steam cleaning, polishing or spray buffing, spot cleaning
  • Furniture and surfaces: soft, leather, wood, metal, plastic, woven, laminate, veneer, painted or lacquer, terrazzo, glass, wall coverings
  • Reporting: line manager, supervisor, problems, issues, queries
  • Records: work schedules, cleaning schedules, audit or check sheet, supply or resource requests, damage reports, time sheets

3 Clean bathrooms

  • Fixtures and fittings: toilets, washbasins, showers, baths, taps, waste containers, walls, floors, doors and door frames, mirrors, surfaces
  • Customers property: personal property, toiletries  
  • Reporting: line manager, supervisor, problems, issues, queries
  • Records: work schedules, cleaning schedules, audit or check sheet, supply or resource requests, damage reports, time sheets

4 Restock customer supplies and accessories

  • Customer supplies and accessories: toiletries, tissues, toilet paper, hygiene bags, towels, coffee and tea making consumables, bottled water, pens or pencils and note pads, turndown items
  • Reporting: line manager, supervisor, problems, issues, queries
  • Waste: Recyclables
  • Records: work schedules, cleaning schedules, audit or check sheet, supply or resource requests, damage reports, time sheets

5 Work as an effective member of the team

  • Communication:
  • ~spoken e.g., tone of voice, terminology
  • ~written e.g., documents, forms, reports, presentations
  • ~body language e.g., posture
  • Situations: formal, informal, queries or requests, complaints
  • Codes of conduct: workplace policies, rules and procedures
  • Reporting: supervisor, line manager, challenges, issues, queries

6 Follow health, safety and hygiene procedures

  • Personal hygiene:
  • ~clean clothing, footwear and headgear
  • ~hair neat and tidy
  • ~wear a head covering e.g., hairnet, hat
  • ~washing hands
  • ~no jewellery
  • ~cover cuts and grazes
  • ~report illness and infections to the proper person
  • Common workplace hazards: slips, trips, falls, breakages, hot surfaces, chemicals
  • Health and safety procedures: following fire regulations, fire drills, evacuation, manual handling, safe use of chemicals, report accidents, first aid
  • Workplace emergencies: accidents, fire, breaches of security, illness
  • Emergency procedures: raising alarm, calling emergency services, firefighting equipment, evacuation procedures
  • Security procedures: control of keys, electronic systems, surveillance, control of entrances and exits, staff and visitor identity badge, reporting of suspicious persons and packages to line manager
